Alec Dempster
Alec Dempster was born in Mexico City in 1971 but grew up in Toronto where he studied printmaking at York University. He has established himself in Xalapa, Veracruz where he both paints and makes prints. Alec is also an accomplished musician, in 1999 he lived in Santiago Tuxtla where he began a series of recordings in the surrounding countryside as well as learning from local ?son jarocho? musicians. The imagery in his artwork is often a response to his immediate surroundings combined with surrealistic associations and memories. The result is a complex narrative which crosses cultural boundaries.

The artist is presenting four images of linocut prints. The artist?s imagery is a response to the daily environment with rich surrealist associations.
Image I: The work depicts a large man sitting crossed-legged on top of a giant bicycle seat. The man holds two drumsticks. The drumsticks are moving and the motion is repeated graffically. The main colour is yellow with some black. Image 2: The image shows an array of machines in a production line fashion. In the foreground, there is typewriter with crochet needles sticking out at the top. In the background, there is a man playing a drumstick which is represented in motion by repetition. The main colours presented in the image are variations of purple and yellow. Image 3: A human-robotic creature with a machine-like head and human arms, is holding a fork in one hand and a toy on the other hand. The predominant colours in the picture are lime green, yellow and blue. Image 4: In the foreground a snake and cacti plants are coming out of a suitcase. The snake has a human hand and is holding a maraca. This scene takes place in the river. The luggage is floating on top of a mattress.
